GABA - Reduce Stress and Anxiety
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a neurotransmitter made from the amino acid glutamate. GABA acts as the brain and nervous system’s primary inhibitor, working as an ‘engine brake’ on the system during times of stress. Low levels of GABA in the brain have been associated with restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, and low mood.[i]
GABA has been shown to inhibit excitatory impulses in the brain, including those responsible for feelings of panic, alertness, anxiety, worry, and fear. The classic treatment for those experiencing these symptoms is the prescription of anxiolytic medications like Ativan or another benzodiazepine. While they can be clinically effective, these medications often create unwanted side effects. This is where a supplement like GABA can shine, as it provides the deficient neurotransmitter that will help balance the brain and nervous system without concerns about side effects.
Studies also demonstrate that GABA alters brain waves. It promotes the transition from a "beta state" (brain waves associated with anxiety and stress) to an "alpha state" (brain waves associated with relaxation). GABA should be given serious consideration by those who suffer from insomnia (often an aspect of anxiety) since alpha brain waves are present at the beginning of a healthy sleep cycle. Here again, using GABA instead of a sleeping pill is a good option as you will avoid the potential side effects associated with the medication.
As with all health issues, the relationship with your healthcare professional is a key part of the process.
