Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Children's Health

You may have heard that omega-3s are good for you as an adult, but did you know they’re just as important for children! Omega-3s come in three main forms: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).[1] Research suggests that both EPA and DHA forms of omega-3s are beneficial for adults and children alike.[1]

You may have heard that Omega-3s are good for you as an adult, but did you know that they are just as important for children! Omega-3s come in three main forms: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).[1] Research suggests that the EPA and DHA forms of Omega-3 are beneficial for adults and children alike.[1]

ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) is found in high-fat plant foods like flaxseed, walnuts, and green vegetables.[1] However, since the body must first convert ALA to EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), it is a less efficient source of the beneficial fatty acids. Studies show that the conversion rate of ALA to EPA and DHA is only 5%.[2,3] EPA and DHA are the two most beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids because they can be metabolized directly, which allows them the most immediate benefits for the human body. EPA and DHA are found in foods such as cold-water fish, seafood, and algae.

Research suggests that, throughout our lives, beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in many aspects of our physical and mental health.[4] Omega-3s have been shown to be beneficial for infant and child health in:

Pregnancy and infant health

EPA and DHA are essential elements for the proper development of the fetal brain and retina.[5] Maternal DHA is the primary source of this fatty acid for the fetus, since it cannot be synthesized directly by either the fetus or the placenta. Breast milk is also a source of Omega-3 fatty acids.[5]

Eye and brain development in children

The retina contains the highest concentration of DHA in the body, [6] which is why Omega-3s are considered especially important for proper eye and brain development in children up to 12 years of age. DHA also accounts for more than 90% of fatty acids in the brain.

ADHD in children

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by developmentally inappropriate and impairing inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.[7] EPA and DHA, along with a unique Omega-6 fatty acid called gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), may help to reduce the symptoms associated with ADHD in children.[7] Dietary supplementation with fish oils (providing EPA and DHA) appears to attenuate symptoms related to ADHD in at least some children, and one study of children with ADHD also found benefits to academic performance.[8]
