Medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil and coconut oil are fats that have risen in popularity along with the keto diet, as well as among athletes and bodybuilders. While coconut oil and MCT oil do share common characteristics, they each have unique benefits and uses.

The difference lies in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs)—fats that are primarily used by the body as an energy source, rather than stored as body fat. The difference between medium-chain and long-chain triglycerides is that based on their structure, they are just the right length (shorter) and therefore break down quickly to be absorbed by the body via the liver, where they are converted into energy—or ketones. Being readily absorbed, MCT oil can be used as an instant energy source since it enters the cells without first being broken down.

Ketones are the by-products of MCTs. Once they are sent into the bloodstream, muscles and tissues can use them as fuel. Ketone bodies also cross the blood-brain barrier. So they become a source of energy for the brain, helping brain cells survive better, which in turn can offer support for age-related cognitive decline.

The fact that they are medium-length and break down quickly prevents MCTs from being stored as body fat when consumed as part of a healthy diet and active lifestyle. This is how MCTs have become an excellent source of energy for workouts, for people wanting to build muscle and endurance (such as marathon runners), and for weight management when used correctly. They have also become very popular with people following the keto diet, due to their nutrient-dense properties.

MCT oil needs to be introduced slowly to prevent digestive issues, that is, until tolerance can be established. Recommended use is one teaspoon, 1 to 3 times per day.

As mentioned, a great way to begin slowly introducing MCT oil as part of a healthy lifestyle is by adding a scoop to a smoothie or cereal bowl. It blends well with any fruits, greens, or protein sources you would normally add to a smoothie, and it will provide the energy you are looking for. Once your digestion has built up some tolerance, you can begin incorporating MCT oil in other ways. Try making a salad dressing using chopped herbs of your choice, balsamic vinegar, and a spoon of MCT oil. It’s fresh and flavourful on any type of salad!
